Devin McGhee, a first-year grad scholar learning movie and tv at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, made her first Glossier acquire over a 12 months in the past and in an instant turned into obsessed.”I genuinely believe when it comes to beauty, sharing is caring! Why keep all the goods to yourself?” she tells Teen Vogue. After she began sharing her favourite Glossier merchandise on her social media accounts, the logo reached out to her about being a rep, and she or he gladly authorized.
Fast-forward a 12 months later, and Devin introduced an Instagram account, Glossier Brown, devoted to other folks of color dressed in the manufacturers’ merchandise. Before her preliminary Glossier acquire, she appeared on social media to seek out girls of color giving their very own testimonials to the now-ubiquitous pink-and-white bottles. “Glossier does a great job remaining inclusive with their campaigns and advertisements, but regardless of which brand and products, I always conduct my own research prior to making my first purchase,” she explains. “At the time, I only found a handful of black and brown YouTubers showcasing how they use Glossier products, but I knew there were more women of colour out there using them, and it was important that the world got to see that.”
Once Devin turned into a Glossier rep, she began to obtain DMs with product tips and color fits for her skin tone. “It was amazing to see all of these women of colour interested in a brand that I adore so much, but I needed a better way to field their questions, manage the load, and show women of all complexions using Glossier products. That’s how Glossier Brown was born,” she says. (While Devin has by no means formally spoken to Glossier about her new Instagram account, founder Emily Weiss and the professional Glossier account each apply Glossier Brown and often like its photos.)
With the introduction of Glossier Brown, Devin hopes that individuals of color will proceed to proportion their favourite Glossier beauty hacks. Take the next, for instance: “As a chocolate woman, my skin’s undertones change with the seasons. Therefore, in the winter, I mix Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint in Deep and Rich for the perfect shade. Whereas in the summer, Rich is my perfect shade alone. But no one knows that unless we share that information with each other, like girlfriends. Ultimately, I want the Glossier Brown Instagram page to be the go-to for women of colour interested in trying Glossier products or that are already obsessed with Glossier products. Like a picture. Comment. Say hi! We’re all sisters here!”
In the beauty house, girls of color are incessantly overpassed and underrepresented, which is why Devin believes Glossier Brown is so necessary. “There aren’t just two or three shades of brown, and Glossier understands that. As much as I love Glossier, I didn’t want women of colour to believe this was just another brand excluding us because the shade range is low [five shades],” she provides.
Since the release of Glossier Brown, Devin has won not anything however positivity — and rightfully so. “Women are just happy that space simply exists and they have another woman of colour to ask for suggestions. It truly makes me proud to have created that space for other women like myself. I love to see women commenting [on] the photos we repost saying things like, ‘YAAAASSSSSSS!’ or ‘Perfection!’ We should always be rooting for each other that way. It costs absolutely nothing to pay another woman a compliment.”
